This is a rare portfolio entry into the Daily Post blog’s Weekly Photo Challenge. The photo dates to around 1978, taken in Richmond Virginia’s Monroe Park on Franklin Street. The part bordered Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus, and it was not at all unusual to see the conjunction of students and the elderly, young with old, even African drummers and winos dancing to their own alcohol-induced haze.
Here, two older gentleman in what 100 years earlier would have been called “Negro Shoes” chat on a bench next to a long-haired young man, who notices me noticing him. It was a time when the Old South was joining the new world, with vestiges of both combining within the crackled joints between them.
